Ok. I can see the benefits. What's the downside? There's always a downside!
This is not a "get rich quick" method to marketing your company, or to earning a living. You will need to photograph the homes, and you will need to organize them and put them into a printable format so your printer can print them.
I can photograph and organize 100 homes in a little over 4 hours work. But that's me. I estimate it will take you much longer to do what I do. However, if you're smart, you won't bother trying to photograph the homes or do the computer work yourself; you'll hire someone to do it. With my book, you can directly show an experienced computer-user or photogarpher how to do things properly while you focus on other aspects of the business.
But let's say you want to do the work yourself. If the neighborhood you want to photograph is 500 homes, I estimate it will take you 40 hours of work before you can finally mail your first postcard. That's 8 hours work per 100 homes, and that's reality. The good news is you can do this part time. Not too mention, once you have the photographs organized in your computer, you can prepare them with new artwork whenever you want because the hard work is already done. It takes me about one hour to prepare 1,000 images with completely new artwork. After the artwork is done, I simply take the digital files to the printer. From there, I go to the bulk mailing post office and get the postcards in the mail.
I work full time. Can I do this on the weekends or in the evening?
You can do the computer work anytime. But I highly advise against photographing on the weekends or in the evenings. The best time to photograph is on a weekday, between 10am and 2pm. If you have obligations that prevent you from photographing during those times, I suggest you hire someone to take the photographs for you.
Are there some neighborhoods that can't be photographed?
I don't recommend photographing gated communities. Although it can be done, you will need to get permission from the Homeowner's Association. For me, it's not worth my time. I will only photograph neighborhoods that have public access to them, and there are plenty of those everywhere. I also avoid any neighborhood where I do not feel safe. I walk around with a $2,000 camera on my neck. Last thing I want is to get mugged or otherwise robbed. Call it arrogance, call it what you want, but I don't bother with dangerous neighborhoods or gated communities. I don't need to. There's plenty of work elsewhere.
How hard is it to learn how to photograph the homes and make postcards out of them?
The most important thing you have discovered by reading this page is this: you have now learned about a successful, proven, business idea. What are you going to do with that knowledge? You will need:
A digital camera and several memory cards. I recommend a 6 megapixel camera at the minimum. An adjustable, wide-angle lens is also recommended. The camera I use is a Canon 20D with a 17-40mm Canon lens. You can certainly accomplish the same result with a less expensive camera. A computer. The better the computer, the easier it will be for you. Adobe Photoshop. You will need Photoshop to manage the images and organize them into a printable format designed specifically for a postcard. Adobe Acrobat A DVD burner to backup your data and to create printable files for your printer. You can certainly do this with a CD burner, but you will have to burn more CDs to make it work. What if I don't have those items? Can I hire someone to do this work for me?
Any competent graphics designer can easily handle the organization of the images once they know how to do it. And you can certainly hire a photographer to take the photos, although I recommend that whoever you hire strictly follows my photography guidelines that are outlined in the eBook.

If you're the only business in town offering this service, you can charge whatever you want since you have no competition.
I charge $1.50 per house, per mailing. My printing costs run about 20 cents per card, and I always send everything by first class mail. Here's the breakdown on what I charge for advertising:
For the very first mailing of a neighborhood, I invest about 40 hours to photograph and prepare 1,000 homes for a mailing. My net profit is $890.00. That works out to be $22.25 per hour. That's an estimated income of $44,500 per year.
However, when it comes time to do a second mailing on the same neighborhood, it takes me only about one hour to prepare the images for printing since all the hard work has been done. Once I have the images organized in my computer, I simply overlay the artwork for the next mailing, and I'm ready to go to the printer.
The profit on the second mailing for 1,000 homes is $890 for 1 hour of computer work. That is if I am charging $1.50 per postcard for advertising. If I include driving to the printer and then driving to the post officer, then my profit is $890 for 3 hours work.
The bulk of my money is made on the 2nd mailing, and every mailing thereafter. The goal is to get the homes photographed and organized. After that, the most expensive part of the process is paying for postage. The rest is almost pure profit.
Wow! $890 per hour! But how many times per year do you mail the postcard?
As often as I like. I would suggest you try to mail a minimum of three times per year for every neighborhood. And for each mailing, find a new business or sell multiple ad spaces. For example, your first mailing could be a real estate agent. Your second mailing could be a plumbing company. And your third mailing could have coupons from eight local businesses. It's really up to you and how much energy you put into selling advertising space.
The highest number of maillings I ever did for one neighborhood within a year was five, and that neighborhood was 1,100 homes. The gross yearly revenue I received for that neighborhood was $8,250. After costs, my net income was $5,005 for approx. 44 hours of toal work, which included photographing the homes and organizing the images.. Of course, that was spread out over the span of a year. The more homes you can get into your computer, the more money you will make.
Can I print the postcards myself and save on printing costs?
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. The retail price of the printer that my printing company uses is about $50,000. You could potentially buy a much smaller version for around $5,000 that could handle the work. But then you become a printing company, and you will encounter problems outside the scope of my eBook. I believe in outsourcing. For me, I like to focus on my strengths, and let others do the work their good at.
How do I find a printer to take care of all my printing needs?
Call around. You will need to find a printer that has a digital, color printer/copier that can work with 11x17 digital files. Duplex printing is not required with the way I design the postcards. If you absolutely cannot find a printer, I can connect you with my printing company in Southern CA. They can certainly handle your printing needs. However, you will incur addtional costs with shipping. They have worked with me since the beginning, and they know exactly how to handle my print jobs. I trust them 100%.
Do you offer support in case I get stuck on any part of the process?
Although I should be charging for support, I will provide email support for those that purchase the ebook.
